There are many industries where advertising can seem so formulaic: pharma, auto dealers and casual dining are some that immediately come to mind. But the king of them all has to be video games: Show the game footage, so the rating, so the title. That's the formula for TV, print, web, etc. Why? Because that's what gamers want to see. They say so all the time in focus groups.
Or do they?
Challenging this notion is Halo 3. The promotion is fantastic. Completely A-typical of what you'd expect to see. They managed to blend one of the most low-fi things in the world (a diorama) with one of the most visually advanced games in the world. Check it out. Oh, and the online chatter around the promotion that I've seen, is incredibly positive.
